manō nātia faʻaseʻe tautua was a strong samoan leader, mother, maker, wife, grandmother, great grandmother, and carer for many. she was warm, with a powerful presence—revered and respected without expectation. she was a pillar of my connection to samoa and of my generational past.
she was the only grandparent i ever knew, and her passing catalysed a deep and ongoing investigation into all of my family no longer with us; their lives, their human qualities, their impact on the worlds they constructed around them.
this piece of music started as experiments in drone, and in a very natural progression, ended up centring around recordings of the conversation we had with mum on the day that grandma passed.
